Pit Bull Ban Triggers Montreal Tourism Boycott<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Thousands of dog owners vow to never spend money in Quebec’s largest city.<\/h4>\n

Montreal Quebec, August 21, 2016: A petition promising a boycott of Montreal if the city goes ahead with its ban on pit bulls has garnered more than 10,000 signatures in 10 days and shows no sign of slowing down.<\/p>\n

“Dog owners around the world are now looking at Montreal and shaking their heads”, says Steve Barker, head of research for the Dog Legislation Council of Canada and the author of the petition. “While jurisdictions all over North America and Europe are getting rid of breed bans and making them illegal, the mayor of Montreal and his political friends have chosen to move backwards instead. This is costly, ineffective, and discriminatory legislation that does nothing to increase public safety and, instead, kills thousands of unoffending family pets simply because of the way they look.”<\/p>\n

On August 17, Mayor Denis Coderre presented his proposal to ban three breeds and dogs with a similar appearance, despite strong recommendations against such a move by dog behaviour and bite safety experts.<\/p>\n

Lawyers and animal welfare groups in Montreal have already raised the prospect of legal action against the city. The Dog Legislation Council of Canada has promised its full support and fundraising efforts to assist them in these actions. The group is supported by a number of other organizations throughout Canada, including HugABull in British Columbia, Justice for Bullies in Alberta, and the Ontario “Pit Bull” Co-op.<\/p>\n

Barker says he expects to see a significant surge of participants in the boycott and the legal fundraising efforts should the mayor proceed with the ban.<\/p>\n

“If politicians in Montreal decide to take the lazy approach to public safety and try to win votes by killing dogs”, says Barker, “then they do not deserve our money. Montreal is becoming a laughing stock and, if its citizens are not happy with that, then they need to tell their mayor.”<\/p>\n

An executive city council vote is expected on August 22 and, if the proposal passes, the new rules will be in place by September 26.<\/p>\n

The Dog Legislation Council of Canada is a Canada-wide non-profit organization that assists municipalities in developing fair and effective animal control legislation, promotes dog bite safety education, and encourages responsible dog ownership.<\/p>\n

Le 17 ao\u00fbt dernier, le maire Denis Coderre a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 sa proposition d’interdire trois races de chiens et les chiens d\u2019apparence similaire, en d\u00e9pit de fortes recommandations contre une telle mesure par les experts en comportement canin et en pr\u00e9vention des morsures.<\/p>\n

Des avocats et les groupes de protection des animaux \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 soulev\u00e9 la possibilit\u00e9 d’une action en justice contre la ville.\u00a0 Le Conseil canadien de l\u00e9gislation canine a promis son soutien et une lev\u00e9e de fonds pour les assister dans ces actions.\u00a0 Le Conseil est appuy\u00e9 par plusieurs autres organismes \u00e0 travers le Canada, y compris HugABull en Colombie-Britannique, Justice for Bullies en Alberta et “Pit Bull” Co-op en Ontario.<\/p>\n

Un vote du conseil de ville est pr\u00e9vu le 22 ao\u00fbt et si la motion passe, le nouveau r\u00e8glement entrera en vigueur le 26 septembre 2016.<\/p>\n

Montr\u00e9al is the largest city in the province of Qu\u00e9bec and the second largest in Canada. Montr\u00e9al\u00a0receives 9.6 million tourists annually who spend $2.9 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n

BUT, the city of Montr\u00e9al\u00a0announced that it will vote in legislation targeting a specific shape of dog next August 22, despite all evidence that such legislations do not increase public safety and, instead, cause the destruction of thousands of family pets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, it is with great sadness that we, as a WORLDWIDE unified dog owning community, must decide to send the city of Montr\u00e9al\u00a0a message that this is not acceptable. As long as this jurisdiction continues to target innocent owners and the canine members of their families based solely on the way they look, we will not step foot inside its boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

When politicians are willing to cause the deaths of thousands of dogs in order to look like they’re “doing something”, when they insist on taking the lazy approach to dog bites instead of putting in the hard work of actual solutions, then those politicians, and that city, do not deserve our money.<\/span><\/p>\n
